Hydration
An important aspect of
aging is that as people age, they interestingly
forget to drink enough fluids. We may think by
putting a pitcher of water or lemonade in the
refrigerator for our aging parents that they
will open the door, get a glass, put a few ice
cubes in it and pour themselves a drink. My
experience, it isn't going to happen.
My tip to improving the hydration
of your loved one is to get a tall, insulated mug
with a handle and a lid and a straw. Put ice in the
mug with their favorite beverage, replace the lid
with the straw and hand it to them while holding the
straw to their mouth. Never assume by leaving the
drink on the table that they will pick it up and
drink. Remember, they forget they are thirsty. Every
time you pass your mother, offer her a drink from
her mug and this form of encouragement is important
for their well-being.
One other tip is that not
everyone is a water drinker so by offering lemonade
or some other beverage that they like, the tendency
to drink it will be greater. Also remember popsicles
and fruit like watermelon is another means of
hydration.
Good hydration, especially in the desert is
important to help reduces the incidences of urinary
tract infection and mental alertness.
