Keep pets out from under foot.

Make sure all steps have handrails.

Have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen.

Remove all area rugs, floor mats and runners.

Keep walk ways, halls and stairs free of clutter.

Footwear should fit well and have non-slip soles.

Garments should not drag on the floor or counter tops.

Have medical and emergency numbers available by all phones.

Bathrooms and bedrooms should be equipped with night lights.

Switches that control lights should be at the entrance of each room.

Do not rush to answer a phone or door. No call is worth risking a fall.

The shower and tub should be equipped with non-slip strips or a mat.

Have a bell, intercom, phone or lifeline available to summon assistance.

Keep electrical cords, drapery cords and oxygen tubing out of walk ways.

If you must smoke, do not smoke in bed or any place where oxygen is being used.

Unplug small kitchen and bathroom appliances after use and don't use near water.

Read labels before taking medications and store out of reach of children and pets.

Glasses, telephone, tissue and water should be in easy reach of the bed and/or chair.

All rooms should have adequate lighting and a light should be in easy reach of the bed.

Use ambulatory aids, such as a wheelchair, walker or cane, as instructed by your doctor.

Have a first aid kit, poison kit and earthquake kit stocked and available for emergencies.

The toilet, tub and shower should be equipped with grab bars and elevated seats, as needed.

Most importantly, have an emergency plan in place in case of fire, earthquake or flood.
